What Is The IQ Scale Range?

Individuals are given IQ tests to find out how smart they are. The IQ scale range shows where a person falls on the intelligence scale after taking the test.

Throughout history, many people have tried to figure out how to measure how smart people are. We put people into groups based on their cognitive skills, just like we put people into groups based on their height (tall vs. short), religion (religious vs. atheist), or job (white collar vs. blue collar).

The “Intellectual Quotient” (IQ) is the most well-known way to measure a person’s intelligence. As a result, the “IQ Scale Range” groups people with different levels of intelligence together.

What Is The IQ Scale?

The average IQ of the population is used to figure out how smart a person is. Your IQ shows how smart you are compared to other people. Where you are on the spectrum will depend on how much your number is above or below the average IQ. This is how the IQ Scale shows the range of human intelligence.

Normal IQ

The normal IQ for a person is 100, which means that their mental age will always be the same as their physical age. Individuals with a mental age greater than or equal to 100 have an above-average IQ. Individuals with a mental age less than or equal to 100 have a below-average IQ.

There are different IQ tests available today, but they all tell you about the same thing: how smart someone is. A bell curve is what you get when you put the IQ scores of a large group of people on a graph. This means that the normal IQ for most people is between 86 and 116. The graph looks like it gets less steep at both ends, with numbers below and above the average on each side.

Many people use the Stanford-Binet test and the Wechsler Intelligence Scales to find out how smart someone is. Let’s look at them and the IQ test that came after.

The Stanford-Binet Test

Lewis Terman and Maude Merrill changed Binet and Simon’s intelligence test in 1937. They got rid of the idea of ratio IQ and added Deviation IQ instead. The test administrator can use deviation IQ to see how far off the average a test taker’s success is. Rate IQ, on the other hand, compares the test taker’s performance to their own by checking to see if their intellectual skills match their chronological age.

The deviation IQ scale was talked about in the part above called “What is an IQ Scale?”

The 5th version of the test says the following about the IQ scale range:

The Wechsler Intelligence Scales

Wechsler said that intelligence is the sum of a person’s abilities. His view is that intelligence is the overall ability of a person to act with purpose, think logically, and deal with their surroundings in the right way.

He said that counting the number of skills that make up intelligence was the best way to figure out what intelligence is all about. These skills are not the same in any way.

Wechsler has written a lot about two types of abilities that are very different from each other: performance abilities (like reasoning and abstract thinking) and vocal abilities (like language and grammar). You can find out your Verbal IQ, Performance IQ, and Full-Scale IQ (Global Intellectual Ability) on the IQ tests that Wechsler made.

The test was first released in 1955, and it was updated for the first time in 1981. With its third update, the WAIS-III, which came out in 1997, the test is used to see how smart adults ages 16 and up are. This version of the IQ measure has the following range:

  • 130 and above: Gifted
  • 120-129: Very High
  • 110-119: Bright Normal
  • 90-109: Average
  • 85-89: Low Average
  • 70-84: Borderline Mental Functioning
  • 50-69: Mild Mental Retardation
  • 35-49: Moderate Retardation
  • 20-34: Severe Retardation
  • 20 and below: Profound Retardation

Updated IQ scale

The test was updated even more, and it came out in 2008. The IQ scale has also been changed, and it now looks like this:

  • 130 and above: Very Superior
  • 120-129: Superior
  • 110-119: High Average
  • 90-109: Average
  • 80-89: Low Average
  • 70-79: Borderline
  • 69 and below: Extremely low

Final Thoughts

IQ tests are a good way to find out how smart someone is and where they fall on the range of human intelligence, but they are not the only way to measure how smart someone is.

There are many things that these tests don’t look at, like a person’s background, where they grew up, level of fitness, and the absence of any diseases that could make them unable to work. When putting someone into a category, we should also think about all of these things.

I think you should get your own IQ test. It’s a fun way to see how smart you are and makes you use your logic, creativity, and sense of beauty.
